S1/E03: #Culture Shock - How to cope with cultural differences

Show notes

Moving to a new country is so much more than what we have in mind or what we think it might involve when transitioning: it is learning a new way to think, communicate, live, eat, work. It is a truly eye opening experience that can also teach us a lot about our own culture and how deeply influenced we are by our environments.

Frauke and Marie-Christine talk about the symptoms of Culture Shock and discuss how to successfully cope with cultural differences. Culture Shock refers to the feelings of distress and unease when being exposed to another culture. It is a time when a person becomes aware of the differences and/or conflicts in values and customs between their home country and the new culture they are in.

In this episode, they do not interview one special guest but many wonderful people from the international community whom they invited to share their perspective on how to deal with culture shock.

Special Thanks to Adriana, Ana, Angela, Grace, Megumi, Nathan, Patricia, Paula, Tiziana, Victoria and Yasuyo.

Episode Highlights (00:02:40) Catch-up: The duo talks about seasonal German Comfort Food, traditions, and festivals in November such as St Martin’s Day and since they are homebased in Duesseldorf right now the start of the fifth season: carnival. (00:09:20) Deep Dive: Culture Shock is such a huge challenge and at the same time such a mesmerizing subject of interest in the field of intercultural research that this deep dive digs deeper regarding the psychological, emotional and cultural aspects of transitioning across borders.
