S1/E04: #Reverse Culture Shock - Feeling Foreign in your Home Country

Show notes

While the phenomenon of culture shock is increasingly well known, reverse culture shock is not as recognized and understood. This is due in part to the fact that people are (just) returning home. So why should "returning home" result in culture shock?

Frauke and Marie-Christine further investigate the phenomenon of reverse culture shock and also asked the international community to share their stories and experiences when returning home to get a better understanding of what it is and how to cope with it. One of the best ways to help you overcome reverse culture shock is to learn more about it.

Episode Highlights

(00:02:44) Catch-up: The duo talks about the upcoming holiday season, German advent traditions and the famous German Christmas Markets or Christkindlemarkets.

(00:05:35) Deep Dive: Moving home isn’t always easy – many who repatriate feel different and completely out of touch. The deep dive explains what reverse culture shock is, what to expect, and how to cope with the effects.

In this episode, Frauke and Marie-Christine do not host one guest but invited the international community to share their perspective on how to deal with reverse culture shock.
